FAQs

Our patients always have good questions, and we enjoy answering them...maybe you've had these questions too?

Are silver fillings bad for me?

No one knows for sure; there is evidence that suggests 'yes' and 'no'. It will probably be several more years before we have a definitive answer, but until then, we think it's best to err on the side of caution when dealing with mercury. We don't place fillings that contain mercury in patients' mouths, and we exercise caution when removing them-using a vacuum to remove mercury vapor and rubber dams to protect from any stray pieces being swallowed. We're also concerned with the lack of strength of silver fillings as compared to newer materials. The materials that we use make the tooth stronger and less susceptible to breaking. We recommend that when it's time to replace old, weakened silver fillings they be replaced with one of the following, depending on your specific needs: 1) a tooth colored material called composite, 2) porcelain, or, 3) gold.

How can I get whiter teeth?

First we'll determine if you are a candidate for bleaching after a thorough cleaning and examination. Some discoloration won't be improved with bleaching and will need bonding, veneers, or crowns to cover the area. If bleaching is best for you, you can choose an in-office or at-home bleaching procedure that will produce rapid results. Over-the-counter kits and even laser bleaching won't do a better job.

How long should I expect a crown to last?

It depends upon many factors: homecare, quality and type of crowns, and follow- up visits. We believe so strongly in our ability to deliver to you the best crowns that, if you follow our recommended hygiene protocol, we offer a limited warranty of five years.

Why do my gums bleed?

Although your gums may bleed because of systemic conditions or dietary insufficiencies, most times it's because of a lack of flossing, brushing, and regular cleanings by a Registered Dental Hygienist. During your checkup we'll help you with your homecare routine to make sure you're doing all the right things.

Why do I need a "night-guard"?

If you are suffering from a TMJ (jaw joint) disorder or are grinding your teeth at night you probably could benefit from a device made of resin, fitted to your teeth, and worn at night. Grinding your teeth results most often in fractured teeth, more TMJ pain, and headaches.

Can you do anything for my bad breath?

Yes! We'll determine why you have bad breath and if needed, prescribe a simple homecare routine using tongue scrapers, special rinses, and cleaning procedures. Your friends and loved ones will thank you!

Can you do anything about my spouse's snoring?

We sure can! We can fit the snorer with a custom-made device which is worn in the mouth at night to comfortably position the jaw in such a way as to eliminate snoring.
